Although Tom Schmitt grew up in Connecticut, he’s called Ohio home for over two decades, beginning in the Dayton area before settling just outside Columbus in Westerville. As a two-time Dayton Flyer, Tom fully believes that a lawyer should be a problem solver, and he uses his “teacher skills” to effectively communicate legal concepts and empower clients to make informed decisions.
In real estate fields, Tom uses his unique experiences to achieve clients’ interests in real estate matters from leases to litigation. With a knack for researching and analyzing title issues, and an attention to detail that helps avoid delays at the closing, Tom loves helping clients invest in their home, as well as their futures through real estate investments like short term rentals. These usually come with setting up business entities for efficient management, to maximize benefits and to effectively plan for the future while also minimizing risk.
Tom strives to make the estate planning process comfortable and straightforward by effectively learning and implementing his clients’ needs and desires through effective methods that are both practical and efficient. He’s had broad probate experience, whether in contested or complex guardianships or pursuing recovery from a former fiduciary.
He is now an active member of the Westerville Sunrise Rotary club and the Knights of Columbus, and enjoys following his favorite baseball and college basketball teams. During law school Tom spent a summer working and studying Irish and European Law in Dublin, Ireland, and brought back an occasional brogue and an expanded appreciation for whiskey. He and his wife Jessica are “opportunity travelers” – taking advantage of circumstances as they come. Together they’re raising three wonderful children at home.
