EQUES State of the firm 2024

State of the Firm 2024

“The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.”
J.R.R. Tolkein

EQUES® Law Group celebrates 14 years of our journey together! There are times I feel our journey has only just begun. There is so much we know now that we did not know 14 years ago, and far larger mountains in front of us than we have ever climbed before. But that is the great thing about being on a journey with a team. No matter the challenges before us, we have an amazing team around us.

2024 begins with EQUES® having its largest team of practitioners and broadest scope of services to date. We can serve our communities in more robust ways than we have ever been able to before. And the team that has said “yes” to being a part of this journey is more invested in our mission than any previous team.

So, without further ado, here is what is new.

Expanding Our ReachWe now have 7 locations across Ohio. You can find an EQUES® team in Berlin, Woodsfield, Cadiz, Northfield, Strongsville, Newark, and Westerville. Our team has also expanded to include 13 dedicated attorneys, each bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise in over 50 areas of practice.  Of our 13 attorneys, we have 9 lead attorneys you should know about:

Tom Schmitt, Associate:
Based in Westerville (our newest office), Tom has broad legal experience and will focus his practice with us on Complex Estate Planning and Real Estate. Tom joined the team right after Thanksgiving, and we look forward to developing the Westerville location.

Lindsey Wrubel, Partner:
Based in Northfield, Lindsey is certified by the Ohio State Bar Association as a Residential Real Estate Expert and focuses her practice on HOA and Condo Associations. She and her team currently serve over 100 associations. Lindsey was also promoted to Partnership this year.

Robert Barga, Partner:
Based in Newark, Robert has one of the fastest-growing individual practices inside the firm. Robert is an avid Civil and Family Law litigator with experience with courts from Columbus to Woodsfield. Robert’s passion is Agritourism and working with farmers to diversify how the public interacts with their land. Robert was also promoted to Partnership this year.

Nichole Hamsher, Associate:

Based in our Berlin office, Nikki has the distinction of being the fastest promoted associate inside the firm. It was just over a year from when she joined the firm to when she became a full associate. Nikki is an excellent Family Law/Domestic Relations Litigator and understands how to handle these exceptionally sensitive matters inside conservative communities.

Moriah Hinton, Associate:
Based out of Berlin office, Moriah’s talents lie within the business lifecycle with our clients. From startup to sales and succession plans, Moriah has worked with clients on almost every phase and issue a business can go through. When she isn’t focused on helping our business clients, Moriah has a passion for adoption and has worked with families from start to finish in the adoption process.

Katherine Kimble, Partner:
Based in Cadiz and running our Eastern Ohio practices, Kate received her Ph.D. in 2023 and is the firm’s leading resource on oil and gas issues. She is a talented litigator of complex cases, having won in front of the Ohio Supreme Court on matters of obscure law. She is also a skilled negotiator who consistently secures excellent terms and compensation for her clients. Kate will be gaining admission to Pennsylvania and West Virginia to continue expanding our service areas.

Matthew Kearney, Partner:
Based in Northfield, Matt was recently admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Matt has litigated on every level of State Court and has experience with Federal District, Appeals, and Bankruptcy Court. Matt holds the role of Managing Partner and works with all our attorneys on their practices.

Thom White, Sr. Partner:
Thom is fully remote and travels wherever he is needed. As the founder of the firm and its current Senior Partner, Thom’s experience and skills as a litigator are unmatched. Thom brings his experience to bear whenever our litigators need advice and insight, but he also maintains an active matter list of complex litigation. There are very few areas Thom does not have experience with. Whether from his time as Prosecutor, his 21 years on the Common Pleas Court bench, or his 14 years of private practice, no better litigator can be found.

Ken Hochstetler, Equity Partner:
Ken is based in Berlin and has a robust transaction practice. In his 10+ years with the firm, Ken has been a clerk, graduated from law school, created a practice as an associate, been promoted to partner, and this year has joined the firm as a co-owner and equity partner. Ken’s focus is on the client experience and building strong and lasting relationships with our communities.

New Services and Achievements
We’ve broadened our service offerings to meet our clients’ diverse needs better. Whether it’s a last will and testament, transferring property, family matters, or engaging in complex litigation, our team is equipped to provide the highest quality legal assistance. A complete list of our practice areas is attached to this update.

Working Partners®
One area that is not on our list is a non-legal offering. This year, EQUES® bought Working Partners®, a 35-year-old drug-free workplace consultancy. Working Partners® primary work is crafting policies for businesses that need and want a drug-free workplace policy. These businesses are often state and federal contractors or anyone subject to Department of Transportation regulations. But with the legalization of adult-use marijuana, there is a need for anyone concerned about how to create a drug and alcohol policy to find experienced support. Working Partners® was first to meet this need in 1989 and has been the leader in this drug free work place policy and consulting for 35 years. On top of the consultancy, Working Partners® has a consortium of over 180 businesses that utilize vendor discounts in drug testing, troubleshooting, supervisor training, employee assistance programs, labor and employment law troubleshooting, and broad-based HR support. Consortium members get access to discounted services in these areas for one annual fee. I would be happy to introduce you to our team at Working Partners® if you have any questions about drug-free workplaces.

Where are we heading
EQUES® is on a continued growth trajectory. In the coming years, we will continue adding new locations, practitioners, and practice areas. We were once given the advice that the more we grow the smaller we need to be. So even though we started off with just two of us and an aspiration to bring best-in-class legal services to Holmes County, it does not mean that now, with over 30 team members, we don’t continue to bring the same personal approach to meeting our clients’ regular and complex legal needs. As we continue to grow, we promise not to lose touch with our values and the communities we started serving 14 years ago.

Thank you for being a part of our journey. We’re excited about what the future holds and hope to share it with you.
